Traffic congestion at Kalyan Phata and Shilphata during peak hours isn't caused by a single problem—it's the result of several factors happening at the same time.

Every morning and evening, thousands of people travel between Kalyan, Dombivli, Palava, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and the nearby industrial areas. This creates an enormous volume of traffic on a road that was never designed to handle so many vehicles.

The situation gets worse because the same road is also used by heavy trucks and container trailers heading to and from industrial zones and ports. Since cars, buses, trucks, auto-rickshaws, and two-wheelers all share the same carriageway, traffic movement becomes slow and unpredictable.

Kalyan Phata and Shilphata are major junctions where traffic from multiple directions converges. During peak hours, these intersections simply cannot process the number of vehicles arriving, leading to long queues and delays.

Rapid residential development in areas such as Palava, Dombivli, and Kalyan has significantly increased the number of daily commuters, while road infrastructure has not expanded at the same pace. Ongoing road construction, flyover works, poor lane discipline, illegal parking, and occasional vehicle breakdowns further reduce the effective road capacity.

During the monsoon, waterlogging and potholes slow traffic even more, turning an already congested stretch into a major bottleneck.

In short, the congestion at Kalyan Phata and Shilphata is primarily the result of very high traffic demand, limited road capacity, mixed passenger and freight traffic, and rapid urban growth, all of which combine to create severe delays during peak hours.

The Experiment 

We stop the movement of heavy traffic emerging from Panvel and going towards Mumbra Bypass and Mumbra City from Morning 6 am to 11 am. This is the time when most of the passenger traffic moves from Kalyan, Dombivali, Ambernath, Badlapur, Palava towards Thane, Navi Mumbai, Mumbai for work.

 

During the evening rush hours the movement of heavy vehicle can be restricted from Mumbai Nashik highway towards Mumbra bypass and Mumbra City During the evening peak hours from 4 pm to 10 pm. This is the time when there is heavy passenger movement from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane towards Kalyan, Dombivali, Ambernath, Badlapur, Palava.

 

This can be done as a test project for 15 days and the results can lead the path.
