The Issue

The updated NYCDMV VPASS platform is creating serious workflow barriers, confusion, and accessibility issues for traffic attorneys, risking due process and unfair penalties for NYC drivers.

We, the undersigned traffic attorneys practicing in New York City, are formally expressing our concern regarding the recent changes to the NYCDMV VPASS attorney platform. Since the implementation of the updated system, the platform has become significantly more difficult to navigate, less transparent, and far more disruptive to daily legal operations.

The new VPASS interface has created substantial barriers in locating tickets, tracking case statuses, and managing hearings efficiently. These issues not only affect attorneys but also directly impact New York City drivers who rely on proper legal representation and timely access to their case information. When tickets are difficult to locate and system navigation is unclear, the risk of missed deadlines and unintended penalties increases.

Additionally, the perception of a harsher, more rigid point-related impact, combined with a less functional platform, may result in more frequent license suspensions for drivers who are not intentionally noncompliant but are affected by system limitations and confusion.

From a professional standpoint, the updated VPASS system has disrupted established workflows that attorneys depend on to ensure due process and fair representation. A legal platform should enhance accessibility and efficiency, not introduce technical hardship that undermines case management and client advocacy.

This change also places an unnecessary burden on the legal system as a whole. When attorneys cannot efficiently access case information, it slows resolution processes, increases administrative strain, and creates avoidable complications for both the courts and the public.

We respectfully urge the NYCDMV to:

  • Conduct an immediate usability and functionality review of the VPASS platform
  • Restore clearer ticket visibility and case tracking features
  • Improve navigation and system accessibility for legal professionals
  • Provide formal guidance and transitional support for platform changes
  • Ensure that system limitations do not lead to unjust penalties or increased driver suspensions

As officers of the legal process in traffic and administrative proceedings, we rely on functional digital infrastructure to uphold fairness, efficiency, and due process. The current state of the VPASS platform compromises those principles.

We are not opposing modernization. We are advocating for a system that is practical, transparent, and fair for both legal professionals and the New York City residents we represent.

We respectfully call on the NYCDMV to engage with traffic attorneys, gather professional feedback, and implement necessary revisions to ensure the platform serves its intended purpose without creating unnecessary hardship.
