Make it standard to include cross contamination warnings for the top 8 allergens on ALL of your privately labeled products.

The Issue

Dear Trader Joes,
Your company provides a place where many families who are concerned with preservatives, artificial ingredients, pesticides and GMOs can shop.  A growing part of that demographic include families with food allergies.  Please help support the movement for better knowledge of what is in our foods by standardizing your labeling practices to declare potential unintended ingredients with warnings for the top 8 allergens (milk, wheat, soy, egg, peanut, tree nut, fish and shellfish) on ALL of your privately labeled products.
According to FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education), every 3 minutes a food allergy reaction sends someone to the hospital.  Many of those people are children.  In fact, between 1997 and 2011 the amount of children with food allergies increased by 50% (FARE).  No one knows why this is, but it is clear the problem is not going away anytime soon.  Many of those with food allergies face the potential for a life threatening reaction.  For this reason, knowledge that a food might unintentionally contain one of the top 8 allergens is essential.  Currently, there is no law requiring a manufacturer to label for unintended ingredients introduced to a food during manufacturing by cross contamination.  Some companies recognize the importance of our right as consumers to know what is, and/or might be in our foods and choose to include warning labels on their packaging.  Trader Joes has demonstrated an understanding of this need as many of your products have labels for cross contamination of the top 8 allergens.  Because there is no standard protocol in place, not all of your products have labels.  This leads to confusion for many of your customers, particularly those not accustomed to reading labels and shopping with special allergy needs in mind.
If you set a precedence for better food labeling standards by labeling for potential cross contamination of the top 8 allergens on ALL of your privately labeled products, other companies may follow suit.  These labels would include  "Made on Shared Equipment", "Made in a Facility With", "May Contain" or "Made in a (allergen/s) Free Facility" using the following guidelines...

"Made in a facility with (insert top 8 allergen/s)": This product is produced in a facility that also processes and/or packages said allergen/s in the facility.

"Made on shared equipment with (insert top 8 allergen/s)": This product shares equipment with said allergen, but strict allergen controls and cleaning are used to minimize risk of cross contamination.

"May Contain (insert top 8 allergen/s)": Despite our best efforts this product may contain trace amounts of said allergen or we do not employ measures to reduce the risk of cross contamination.

"Made in a (insert top 8 allergen/s) free facility": This product and its ingredients are processed in a facility that does not produce and/or package any of the said allergen/s.

Please help spread the awareness for the importance of knowing what is in our food.
