Justice for Kenyairra Gadson

Justice for Kenyairra Gadson

The Issue

In October of 2018, Kenyairra Gadson was imprisoned for two years for first-degree reckless homicide for attempting to protect herself from a man from whom she suffered long-standing harassment and a group of his friends who happened to be there that night. Despite the strong case to be made for self-defense, the Madison carceral system decided that Kenyairra, a queer Black woman fearing for her safety, was a reckless murderer, rather than a victim of neglect and an uncaring society. Kenyairra suffered years of abuse, harassment, and threats of violence from the man. When she and her friends were attacked by this man, she defended herself in the only way she was able. Dane County claims to be survivor focused; however, that apparently does not extend to Black women in Madison. We are petitioning for Dane County to act like it cares about Black women whom are victims and survivors of physical violence and for the District Attorney to drop all charges against Kenyairra. Black women are deserving of not being criminalized for being victims and survivors. Black women are deserving of being able to act in self-defense. Black women are deserving of being protected by laws instead of being persecuted. Black women deserve better!
