TOYOTA: INCREASE DANGEROUS SAFETY RECALL REPAIR RATES

Safety defects addressed by recalls are dangerous - not only to the driver of the vehicle but to those traveling around them on the road. Defects addressed by safety recalls have been responsible for crashes, property damage, injuries, and deaths. Many people don't know the repairs are often quick and always completed free of charge at local dealerships.

A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report demonstrates that Toyota's safety recall completion rates dropped for three consecutive years when the manufacturer stopped providing VIN specific information pertaining to un-repaired safety recalls to its local dealerships around 2010.

The US government's federal monitor for the Takata airbag safety recall created a report explaining auto manufacturers like Toyota can increase safety recall completion rates by providing, "dealers with owner contact information for assigned VINs so that they can conduct outreach to owners of assigned VINs..." The monitor also reported, "Many dealers feel they receive inadequate data from affected vehicle manufacturers."

Toyota used to provide this VIN specific information to its local dealerships. Aside from the Takata recall Toyota does NOT provide these VIN specific safety recall lists to local dealerships.Toyota currently maintains this information and it could be easily distributed.

TOYOTA STOPS PROVIDING SAFETY RECALL LISTS TO LOCAL DEALERSHIPS

The Takata monitor's report explains that when provided to local dealerships this VIN specific data for un-repaired safety recalls contributed to “more than doubling” the Takata safety recall completion rates “in less than two months.”

Other manufacturers such as Honda, Chevy, and VW have made this VIN specific safety recall information available in some form to their local dealers.

This petition calls for Toyota to immediately start supplying VIN specific information for ALL un-repaired safety recalls to local dealerships on at least a bi-weekly basis so that they can efficiently reach out to local owners and fix these life-threatening safety recalls free of charge.

Show Toyota that you care about the safety of American roads and families by signing and sharing this petition.
