Town of Sterling DPW needs to change the timing on a traffic light at 140 and Dana Hill Rd

Town of Sterling DPW needs to change the timing on a traffic light at 140 and Dana Hill Rd

The Issue

There was a study done on the intersection of Rt 140/Redemption Rock Trail/Dana Hill Road/Legg Road, back in 2016 to take a look at the timing of the lights.  Nothing was ever done to change the timing.  The DPW has the key to the traffic box.  The DOT, division 3, Plantation St., Worcester, has the study and is willing to help the DPW change the timing.  The timing is too short.  Several times a day there are too many cars and buses coming from the Legg Road side, from Holden and W. Boylston, and they have the right of way.  So the cars coming out of Dana Hill have to often wait for 2 lights to get through, especially if they are taking a left to go towards I-190.  The ultimate solution would be to have a left turn only signal for those that want to turn left, but that is in the distant future.  You will see one picture here of a dump truck that had to wait to get through the light and then only two cars after him were able to cross over 140.  The next cars had to wait for another light.  Many times there are 4 school buses coming back from Holden that are crossing over from Legg Road to Dana Hill and they have the right of way.  Four school buses are able to get through the light, but the cars on Dana Hill can't get out.  By the time the light changes again, there is another line of cars coming.  And the cars that are coming out of Legg Road taking a right to head towards the highway, they don't yield.

On May 23, 2022, I was waiting at this light in the morning and a truck came up on my right side and gunned it across the road and went through a red light because he didn't want to wait for the signal to change and still be stuck there.  This is how accidents happen.

One day I came upon an accident that happened there early in the morning and a baby in a car seat was sitting on the side of the road that was taken out of the wrecked car.

It took 11 people dying at this intersection to even get the light put in.  Now it needs to have the timing lengthened to allow the cars to get out on both sides before the light turns red.

The Sterling Police know about this issue, the DPW superintendent knows about this issue, the DPW board members know about this issue, the DOT knows about this issue, yet no one does anything to fix the timing.

I have done all the leg work for them and found that there was a survey done.  The current DPW superintendent didn't know it was done since he is new to the job.  Please help get this circulated and sign and share and get the light changed.
