Restoration of Fixed Bus Route in Southington

Restoration of Fixed Bus Route in Southington
The Issue
Southington’s lack of public transportation creates a hole in the center of the state that keeps the residents of Southington from traveling to adjacent towns and to the rest of the state. All other surrounded towns have access to public transportation.
A plan set forth by the CT DOT provides for the restoration of fixed route bus service running down route 10, cutting through Plantsville, then back up West St to Bristol. Without support from our town government, no development of this plan will occur.
The bus would connect to Fast Track in Southington, allowing our residents the ability to leave Southington to go work, to go to school, to medical appointments, or be entertained almost anywhere in the state of CT.
The Southington Town Council should support the proposed fixed route bus service in the Town of Southington for the following reasons:
WHY DO WE NEED PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN SOUTHINGTON?
- There is no cost to the town to add a fixed bus route.
- Southington has 43,863 residents and is the ONLY town of its size in the USA to have NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
- Estimated 5,571 disabled residents
- 2nd highest number of senior citizens in Hartford County (second to West Hartford)
- It is estimated, based on town size, that there will be approximately 1500 riders per day if Southington had a bus.
- Public transportation would automatically entitle Southington to paratransit services that can provide disabled individuals (who reside within ¾ a mile zone on either side of a fixed bus route and cannot take a public bus) with service by a smaller private bus.
- Paratransit service will take disabled individuals who qualify to any appointments or events within the state for a minimal fee ($3.50)
- 56% of our residents live within this ¾ mile buffer
