We call on the Town of Indian Head to add a TNR program to control the cat population
The Issue
This is a petition to call on the Town of Indian Head to add to their bylaws regarding community cats with a TNR program which allows the trapping, sterilizing and returning of cats back to their colonies to control the cat population.
TNR has proven time after time how efficient it is and how it helps so many avenues of cat problems. There is a main cat colony that Edith H. has been caring for and I am also very familiar with. There are about 20 cats in this location. Every year, multiple times a year, these cats reproduce. Some kittens find homes, but many die. The suffering of kittens is preventable! Through TNR, I myself, will trap these cats, fix them and send them back to their outdoor home.
One female cat can produce 180 cats in her lifetime. Let that sink in for a moment. Through TNR we are preventing hundreds of future births. Hundreds of future kittens who will not be suffering with medical issues or extreme winter weather.
Through TNR there will be significantly less destructive cats over time as well. The number of roaming, yowling, destructive cats will go down significantly! Cats in heat, looking to mate are the ones who do this!
The town of Indian Head will still have plenty of cats to control the rodents for those who are worried about that as well. There will always be cats, ALWAYS. This program is not to eradicate the town cats, it is to control the huge population.
The only bylaw right now states that if the town traps a cat, it is brought to the vet clinic and held for 3 business days. If nobody claims the cat, there is a small window for someone else to come and adopt the cat but usually it ends up a euthanasia. Most of the time, the cat that is trapped is an outdoor cat and not socialized to humans and would not make a good pet. The problem with only having this type of program is that euthanizing a cat here and there doesn't solve the problem short term or long term because there are an abundance more cats who will be born and come along.
The bottom line is that there are hundreds more cats than we need or can handle to give proper care. This program will not take away from what the town already does, it will simply add to it. It is truly a win win for everyone!
At this time, during these delicate first steps, all I'm asking is for the town to allow me (and whoever is interested in helping) to do this. I'm not asking for town funding. It seems there are a few supporters willing to fundraise with me.
I also encourage you to research more about TNR and spread the word!
