Cary Towne Indoor Track

The Issue

Several times per week between December and March, thousands of high school Track and Field athletes across the area must take early dismissal from classes to board buses for a two hour trek to Winston-Salem. Their coaches, who have already worked a long day teaching in the classroom, climb onto the activity buses to dutifully drive our kids to the meet, where they spend the next few hours coaching, before making the late return drive home. They do so because there is no competition indoor track in the Triangle. This is despite Track and Field being the highest participation sport in the North Carolina High School Athletics Association (NCHSAA).

On February 17, the Wake County Board of Commissioners approved the Town of Cary's request for $59 million in public funding to build a $193 million multi-sport indoor athletics facility on the site of Cary Towne Center.

Unfortunately, and for reasons unknown, the RFP submitted by the Town of Cary removed the indoor track from scope. Speaking on behalf of the thousands of athletes, coaches, parents and supporters of the sport, we believe this is both unfortunate and unacceptable given that this project will involve over $59 million in public funding.

Despite assurances by the town that a 200-meter competition indoor track would be included under scope, it is not part of the latest plan. This must change and we need your support.
