The architects and developers have now submitted new proposals to Tower Hamlets Planning Department - and you can see then here (they're all dated June 18th): http://planreg.towerhamlets.gov.uk/WAM/findCaseFile.do;jsessionid=40D9EAB869695E59B09C4ADC83F09A9A?appNumber=PA%2F14%2F03547&action=Search The good news - and it really is good news - is that the new proposals retain the first floor facade (which is what we were campaigning for, although ideally with listed status). The architects now propose a sympathetic 'shop front' entrance to development, matching those on the other side of the Mile End Road. BUT we need to continue to lobby the Council and this is what I hope you'll do: a) go to the planning department website and click on the tab that invites you to comment on the revised proposal b) I hope we can persuade the developers that the most appropriate (and attractive) way of telling the Spiegelhalter story is by using the relevant entry from Nairn's London - a punchy piece of prose that recounts the story with wit and energy, and could form the basis for a permanent display. This would be a fitting tribute to the greatest of all topographical writers as well as a brilliant bit of PR for the developers - they'd win a lot of friends. c) The developers are very reluctant to re-instate the name Spiegelhalters on the front of the facade (and seem to want to stick with the moth-eaten "Dept. W" brand). d) we hope the windows of the first floor facade will be reinstated - framed and glazed. I think it would be a witty addition to add some net curtains and lamplight, suggesting spectral occupation - so feel free to raise this matter. The windows should not be left as voids. And hats off to BuckeyGrayYeoman for listening to the thousands of objections and suggestions from all of you (as well as the East End Preservation Society, Twentieth Century Society, Victorian Society and Georgian Group, not forgetting English Heritage (as it used to be called). The battle is almost over - although the war will continue. Spiegelhalters already stands as a plucky symbol of stubborn Cockney opposition. We can all learn from that! All the best, David
