Toronto Hydro - Reduce Delivery Fees for Multi-unit Buildings
The Issue
Every person who pays their own hydro is charged for - amongst other things - a delivery charge. Often, this charge comes close to doubling the overall bill when added to the amount charged for the actual hydro used by each client. As hydro prices rise, more and more families and individuals who live at or near the poverty line are faced with hydro bills they cannot afford. Many of these people live in small apartments or multi-residence buildings, as the cost of owning a home is not feasible for them.
As Toronto Hydro explains on their website: "The Delivery Charge covers the cost of delivering electricity from the generator to Toronto Hydro, and then to your home or business."
In a building where there are 20, 50, 100, or more units that each pay for their own hydro, this means that Toronto Hydro is profiting 20, 50, 100 or more times for hydro that is going to the same place.
In 2015, Toronto Hydro boasted a revenue of $3,539.9 million dollars, with their net profits at $126.7 million dollars. CEO Anthony Haines' salary in 2012 was $935 501. The current extreme rise in hydro rates isn't just going to the transmission of electricity, it's going squarely into people's pockets.
Enough is enough. Many of us are struggling to get by, and simply can't afford a $300 hydro bill for a 600 sq ft apartment.
It's time to call on Toronto Hydro to significantly reduce delivery rates to multi-unit buildings.
