The Issue

As a resident of Toronto, I stand with countless others who are suffering from the harmful effects of the city’s hard water. It’s not just an inconvenience—it’s an unaddressed health crisis. Many of us deal with persistent skin conditions such as acne, hair loss, dry skin, eczema, and rashes. We spend significant money on products, treatments, and dermatology appointments just to manage these symptoms. But what if these expenses weren’t necessary? Why do you think we have so many dermatologists in our city? Only for them to tell us what products to buy rather than addressing the real issue with water filters? Because we’re being driven into consumerism, paying out of pocket for treatments instead of the city fixing the root problem. But why should we even buy filters to fix the problem our own city causes? We are being scammed by our own city.

Toronto’s hard water supply is quietly affecting the health and well-being of its residents. We are not alone in this; nearly 85% of Canadian households are affected by hard water, but Toronto is one of the most severely impacted areas (Canadian Water Quality Association). The minerals present in hard water—calcium and magnesium—are known to irritate skin and worsen conditions like eczema and psoriasis (Journal of Water Health). Worse still, this problem isn’t just skin-deep. Our appliances are also affected, with increased wear and tear on washing machines, dishwashers, and water heaters leading to frequent breakdowns and higher maintenance costs.

But there’s hope. Cities around the world have already implemented water-softening technology at the source, resulting in marked improvements in public health and reduced strain on household appliances (International Journal of Dermatology). Why hasn’t Toronto done the same?

We, the citizens of Toronto, are not just paying our taxes. We are paying in more ways than one could imagine. The resultant skin conditions push us to frequent dermatologists. To mitigate the effects caused by the hard water, we find ourselves purchasing an array of products. All this, due to the quality of water we receive in return for our hard-earned money and trust.

Join us in demanding that Toronto implement water-softening technology and deliver soft water to every household. Let’s stop managing the symptoms and start solving the problem. Sign the petition today and help push our city to make this essential change. Together, we can create a healthier Toronto for everyone.
