Hi everyone,
Please take a minute to read this short statement from my union, United Voices of the World, appealing for support not only for the important work they do but for also my fellow cleaners (see picture) who work at a building called 100 Wood Street in the City of London and have taken the difficult and courageous decision to go on indefinite strike action commencing Wednesday 8th June, in order to secure the London Living Wage of £9.40 per hour.
100 Wood Street is owned by CBRE a Fortune 500 company, and the tenants of the building include financial giants such as JP Morgan and Schroders so have so it is quite disgraceful that the cleaners should not be paid a living wage.
If you have any questions then please leave a comment and I\'m sure my union will get back to you
-------------
UVW is an entirely volunteer run union that supports some of the most oppressed and unrepresented groups of workers in the UK. We take on some of the most unscrupulous employers in the country.
We have won significant victories including, but not limited to: securing the London Living Wage for hundreds of workers that previously earned poverty wages; becoming the first union to secure occupational sick pay for outsourced cleaners and security guards in the private sector; winning over £120,000 for our members in compensation from employers that have unfairly dismissed, discriminated against or victimised them; and most importantly, helping our members get the respect and dignity they deserve and which employers try so hard to deny them.
In early June 2016 UVW were forced to go to the High Court to fight an injunction in order to defend basic trade union principles. In particular, the injunction was intended to stop potential strike and protest action over unfair dismissals and demands for the London Living Wage and was sought as an attempt to get UVW to back off in order to allow cleaning companies to get back to doing what they do best: underpaying, overworking and mistreating cleaners.
Whilst the strike will go on we now face costs that will seriously undermine our ability to carry on the vital work we undertake.
Please don't let the cleaning contractors silence our union!
