Too Many Signs, Too Many Tickets: Reform East Orange Parking Enforcement
The Issue
East Orange residents deserve fair and reasonable parking enforcement. For years, many residents have called East Orange, New Jersey home for 10+ years, building families and communities here. Yet as the cost of living continues to rise, residents are being burdened even further by excessive parking fines caused by confusing and restrictive street parking rules.
Throughout East Orange, many streets have multiple parking signs stacked on one pole, often with different rules, time restrictions, permit requirements, and emergency regulations all at once. This creates confusion and makes it extremely difficult for residents to know when and where they can legally park. In many neighborhoods, residents are left with little to no legal parking options.
As a result, hardworking people are receiving ticket after ticket—sometimes even outside of the posted sign hours. Residents are then forced to either pay fines they may not deserve or take time off work to appear in court, only to face the same cycle again.
I personally have received several tickets due to this issue, and the financial strain has become so severe that it is forcing me to consider relocating. No resident should have to leave their city because of unfair parking enforcement.
This issue has already gained major public attention. My TikTok video on @bres.pretty.face exposing these parking sign conditions has reached nearly 40,000 views, with close to 4,000 likes and nearly 700 comments from people sharing the same frustrations and experiences. This proves that this is not an isolated problem -it is affecting the community at large.
We are calling on East Orange officials and the Orange Parking Authority to:
Remove confusing multi-sign poles and simplify parking signage.
Review and dismiss unfair tickets issued due to unclear signage.
Increase available resident parking options.
Stop predatory ticketing practices that target residents already struggling with rising living costs.
Create fair and transparent parking policies that residents can realistically follow.
