Coming Up Roses /Rhosyn a Rhith is a 1986 Welsh language comedy film ( with subtitles). It was directed by Stephen Bayly and starred Ifan Huw Dafydd Hywel, Iola Gregory and Gillian Elisa. The film was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival. The film centres on the closure of the last small town cinema in the South Wales Valleys and the community's efforts to pull together to save the cinema. The cinema in question was The Rex and the town was Aberdare. It's a fantastic film showing how a mining community come together during the austerity of the miners strike to save their cinema. Its a wonderful uplifting film and once our Pier Pavilion cinema is reopened it should be screened there as a tribute ! The Rex in Aberdare is now long gone and is now a car park which ironically was the fictional proposal in the film which sparked off the community campaign. Whilst there is no question of our cinema being bulldozed the lights need to be turned back on. In Coming Up Roses the darkened cinema became the home of a community mushroom growing social enterprise. We don't want that to be the future of our lovely cinema
