Keep Penarth Pier Pavilion Cinema open

The Issue

Penarth Arts and Crafts (PACL) is the charity that operates Penarth Pier Pavilion and is chaired by Tony Hazell. The Pavilion reopened in 2013 following a multi million pound refurbishment including a large Heritage Lottery grant. The Pavilion is the jewel in the crown of Penarth Pier which is owned by the Vale of Glamorgan Council. It was crowned Pier of the Year in 2014.

The Pavilion is home to a state of the art 70 seater community cinema which shows a comprehensive range of popular and specialist films and is well used by people from Penarth and further afield. It is the only cinema in the town. It had to add additional screenings of La La Land earlier this month due to demand from audiences

On Thursday February  23rd PACL announced the cinema would close from March 6th and would not operate during the spring and summer 'to concentrate on increasing activities in the Pavilion' PACL say that they will reopen the cinema in the autumn.

We call on PACL to reconsider this decision which deprives the people of Penarth of their only cinema. It will lead to a loss of support for the cinema which needs to be nurtured and marketed not mothballed after just 3 years of operation. We believe this leaves its future in extreme doubt.
