The "Revitalization" of Downtown Toms River
The Issue
ATTENTION TOMS RIVER RESIDENTS!!
We are asking for your support. The Township Council is on the verge of passing a resolution that would change the current "Downtown Re-Development Plan". This change would allow developing land along our remaining waterways that have been designated for "Open Space/Green Space for Public Enjoyment". Under the new plan, these parcels would be developed into High Density Residential Sites.
Although some of the New Development Plan offers Positive change, we do not want to see History repeat itself here in Toms River, where most of our waterfront properties are owned by individuals. Our town is named after the Toms River, yet we are the only town along the River without a Public Promenade, Beach or Docks.
Along with giving up our land, this proposal also allows for Pilot Programs and Incentives to Developers who bring their projects to Toms River. Much of those incentives are in the form of Reduced Tax Payments, Exemption From Paying School Taxes, and Township property being sold to one in particular Developer, for $1.00.
Originally, that parcel of land where the Red Roof Inn stood, was to be the home of the Town's new Amphitheater. Now it is slated to be the entrance to the Developer's 2, Ten story apartment buildings which will include 285, 1-3 bedroom apartments, as well as retail space.
Please sign below to let our Township Council know that while we support bringing new projects to our Town, they need to be positive not only for the Developers, but the Township and Residents as well.
