Substitute Teachers Deserve To Be Paid, Too!

Substitute Teachers Deserve To Be Paid, Too!

The Issue

COVID-19 has shut down schools across the country.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests schools could be out between eight and 20 weeks.  While most of the Pittsburgh Public Schools employees continue to receive their paychecks and benefits, there are those that will be left with no income.

According to a statement from the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers; Pittsburgh Public Schools Day-To-Day Substitute Teachers will not receive any pay as of March 16, 2020.  During a regular school year, Day-To-Day Substitutes are relied upon to provide vital coverage across the district. Daily pleas for Substitutes by Pittsburgh Public Schools highlight the critical service these employees provide; not only in the classrooms, but by filling demanding clerical and student service positions as well. However, Pittsburgh Public Schools Day-To-Day Substitutes do not receive any medical or retirement benefits, paid time off (PTO), or paid sick leave; and have now been informed that they will not receive any income during this time of forced unemployment.

During this time as COVID-19 cases rise within the Pittsburgh Public Schools District, Day-To-Day Substitutes will not have medical insurance to ease treatment costs if they contract this devastating disease.  Without pay, they are unlikely to have the resources to pay for treatment out-of-pocket. Should these individuals, who have been trusted to care for the community's children, be left without the resources to care for their own? Please join me in sharing the message to Pittsburgh Public Schools Administration: Day-To-Day Substitute Teachers are not beneath any other employee in the Pittsburgh Public Schools.

Pittsburgh Public Schools Day-To-Day Substitute Teachers support every person in our district from students to principals; it's now your chance to support THEM! Urge Dr. Anthony Hamlet to pay the Day-To-Day Substitutes based on their average days worked!
