Our Story
Our business and livelihood are in jeopardy and we need your help. We own and operate a small, family-owned meat business, making beef and pork products (including beef patties, etc.) for 100+ farmers in the PA and New Jersey area. Over the course of the past 30+ years, we have served both the public and local farms with the highest quality of processing and manufacturing for their own meat. Our business is essential and indispensable to our customers and our employees. Should we be forced to close, the negative effect this would have on us, our customers, and employees would be widespread and life-destroying to thousands.
The Details
The PCRB (Pennsylvania Compensation Rating Bureau) is now stating that our employees fall under the Code: 910 – Meat Dealer Wholesale. We are not a Wholesale Dealer now nor have we ever been. We process animals for farmers who own said animals. The farmers pay us for our services to process their meat into products such as: sausages, beef patties, hams, bacon, ground beef, smoked products, steaks, etc. Once we give the farmers their meat, they go on to sell their products to their own customers. Throughout the entire process, the farmers (our customers) own their animals and their meat. Code 910 incorrectly puts us in the category of a wholesale business that does not perform any smoking of meats, both of which are untrue.
Workman’s Compensation is charging us close to $50,000 and we can not afford this. Our only option is to close our business operations. Our 26 employees would become unemployed and our 100+ farmers (who raise their own animals) will have nowhere to go to have their animals processed. Thousands will be hurt by this. Along with our 26 employees and our 100+ farmers, we are all working on the front line during this pandemic, putting our lives at risk to help our community. This is extremely unfair and makes absolutely no sense why Workman’s Compensation is doing this.
We have requested a physical audit be performed, so that they can see with their own eyes exactly what we do. PCRB has not performed a physical audit. We were just emailed questionnaires, which we completed. A questionnaire is insufficient, as we do not directly fall under any classification. We received their decision of our “incorrect coding” on May 15, 2020.
Our operations more suitably fall under Code: 119 - MEAT PRODUCTS MFG., N.O.C.
The Solution
Our business clearly doesn't fall under the current suggested classification. It is imperative that the PCRB sends an agent out to our facility to witness the fact that we operate nowhere near the classification designated to us. Please help us save Nello's Specialty Meats by showing your support and signing our petition to demand that a physical audit be performed and that our business be correctly reclassified under the appropriate non-wholesale code.
