No More Left Lane Drivers

No More Left Lane Drivers

The Issue

It is commonly referred to as 'the left lane'. However it is actually 'the left general purpose lane'. This is the furthest left lane, not including the HOV lane. This lane is used for passing a vehicle that may be driving slower than you. Perhaps it is an oversized vehicle that you can't see around, so you would like to pass and get around this larger  vehicle. Maybe it's a truck that is flinging tiny gravel rocks, potentially chipping your windshield.  Maybe it's a person that is always tapping their brakes, for no apparent reason. Whatever your reasons are for wanting to pass, the left general purpose lane has to be accessible to do so. Any driver on a highway of more than one lane in the same direction must 'by law' yield to the overtaking vehicle, by merging safely over to the right lane. A driver may not impede the movement or free flow of traffic in the left general purpose lane. If a person has driven on any Utah highway, any day at any time, even if only once, has had the misfortune of encountering a 'left lane driver'. As a daily commuter in Salt Lake City I implore you to sign this petition so maybe some action will be taken against left lane violators. Some of the responsibility lies with the Drivers License Division.  Perhaps address this issue in greater depth on the driving test and/or drivers test  study handbook.  The same could be said for the Drivers Education classes being taught in high school or private businesses offering driving classes. Parents could explain to the teenagers they are teaching to drive that 'Keep Right Except to Pass' is a law not a suggestion. Men and women of law enforcement tasked with keeping Utah roads safe could start ticketing at the very least pulling over these left lane drivers. Perhaps more road signs need to be put up. It's a problem that affects us all. We all need to be part of the solution. A happier, more pleasant driving experience has no down side. It is a win for everybody. A happy driver is more likely to be a considerate driver. Less stress equals lower blood pressures. Less anger means less road rage. It is already a law. We just need it enforced. The benefits are endless. NO MORE LEFT LANE DRIVERS.
