Together for inclusive gaming: Screen Reader implementation on the next Nintendo Switch

The Issue

Dear mr. president Shuntaro Furukawa and the other responsibles within the Nintendo company,

We, the blind community, are asking for screen reader integration for the next upcoming nintendo console.
I have been an avid gamer since childhood. Games like Mario, Mortal Kombat, and Adventure Island were my constant companions, sparking joy and shaping my interests. Even today, despite my blindness, I manage to play mainstream games like 13 Sentinels and the Last of Us series. However, with the complexity of modern game menu and console interfaces, it's becoming increasingly challenging for those of us in the blind community to fully enjoy the immersive gameplay experience.

Unfortunately, Nintendo-- a company that many of us have grown up admiring-- hasn't implemented screen reader technology in its consoles yet. This technology, which has enhanced the gaming experience for the visually impaired within the Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox communities, translates the on-screen text into speech, allowing blind users to navigate through the game menus and settings  easily.

Being excluded from a large part of the gaming world isn't just disappointing for blind gamers, it's also a missed opportunity for the industry. According to the World Health Organization, 2.2 billion people worldwide have a vision impairment. It's an immense community waiting to be served and included in the gaming world. By implementing a screen reader in the next Nintendo Switch console, Nintendo could experience a rise in sales while simultaneously promoting inclusivity and accessibility in gaming.

We urge Nintendo to integrate screen reader technology into their next Switch console. This advancement would redefine gaming for the blind community, allowing us to engage fully in an activity that we love, along with the other sighted players. Please sign this petition to call on Nintendo to consider adding this much-needed feature.
