Support the Fighting Foreign Corporate Control Bill
The issue
Fighting Corporate Control
Our government is secretly negotiating the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) - a 'trade deal' with America and 10 other Pacific Nations - that will not only restrict our freedom, but the freedom of our children and our children's children forever. Once it is signed, it cannot be undone by any future government.
Trade Minister Tim Groser told Parliament in May the final agreement would contain what are known as Investor -State- Dispute- Settlement (ISDS) provisions . These provisions allow multinational corporations to restrict our laws by suing us in overseas courts for millions of dollars if certain constraints prevent them from maximizing their profits.
Recently the United Nations Human Rights Office warned that these provisions have been used to penalize Nation States for adopting regulations that protect the environment, food security, access to generic and essential medicines, and the reduction of smoking.
What Can We Do?
New Zealand First have produced the Fighting Foreign Corporate Control Bill which provides that “New Zealand must not enter into an agreement with one or more foreign countries that includes provision for investor-state dispute-settlement " (Clause 5).
We the undersigned call on United Future's Peter Dunne & ACT's David Seymour to join Labour, the Greens and the Maori Party to support the Fighting Foreign Corporate Control Bill through its first reading so it can go to a Select Committee so there will be an opportunity to discuss these worrying ISDS provisions.
