TNR Program for Lee County (Sanford, NC)

TNR Program for Lee County (Sanford, NC)
The Issue
Currently, Lee County is facing a critical issue. Animal Control is preparing to trap cats across numerous properties, yet the Lee County Animal Shelter has extremely limited capacity for feral cats. This makes it highly likely that many healthy animals may be euthanized due to space constraints, an outcome that can be avoided with a more progressive approach.
In my own community, I have seen firsthand how quickly the cat population can grow when there are no effective solutions in place. It's heartbreaking to witness the influx of feral and community cats, knowing that without intervention, the problem only gets worse.
Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is not only a humane approach but also a nationally recognized solution for managing community cats. Through TNR, cats are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, and then returned to their original location. This helps control the population, prevents unwanted litters, and improves the overall health of the cat colony and the neighborhood environment.
Research shows that TNR not only stabilizes cat populations but also emphasizes the well-being of the cats and the community. According to Alley Cat Allies, communities that have adopted TNR have seen a decrease in cat-related complaints and a more harmonious coexistence with these animals. Moreover, TNR reduces the number of kittens born and subsequently lowers the need for constant intervention by Animal Control, saving taxpayer dollars.
We urge the Lee County government to implement a comprehensive TNR program as a long-term, humane solution to the growing number of community cats. This program should include partnerships with local organizations to ensure that every cat captured is spayed or neutered before release, and proper monitoring systems are in place to evaluate the program's effectiveness.
By signing this petition, you are supporting a compassionate solution for Lee County's cat population problem. Let's work together to create a community where cats and humans can live together peacefully. Please sign and share this petition to urge Lee County officials to take action now!
