The following petition has been created in response to recent allegations against Paul Staehle. The purpose of this petition is to establish new standards for vetting cast members of the 90 Day Fiance franchise. In addition, provisions are set out to ensure TLC and Discovery Inc. culpability while protecting and supporting the well-being of past, current, and future cast members.

TLC and Discovery Inc. have enabled numerous Americans with criminal backgrounds to be on the 90 Day Fiance franchise. The latest development on Karine Staehle’s allegations validate the danger of enabling abusers through their television appearances and subsequent fame. It normalizes these patterns and provides a platform for abusers to make money as well as collect biased evidence (strategic editing and/or opportunities for publicized self-justification).

The 90 Day Fiance franchise is a show about international dating. These types of marriages have higher rates of abuse in the United States.

The facts

  • Abuse rates among immigrant women are as high as 49.8%, this is almost three times the national average.
  • Only 5% of abusers have criminal histories that exclusively involved domestic abuse.

Our demands for TLC and the Discovery Channel

  • Implement new standards for casting that include, but are not limited to, prohibiting any person with a violent criminal background from appearing as a main cast member in any of the 90 Day Fiance franchise series.
  • A trained, certified mental health specialist must be available and accessible to any person appearing on the show.
  • Any staff member concerns must be followed up with by a social worker.
  • Once abuse allegations arise, TLC must remove the accused from, but not limited to, Cameo, cable episode reruns, and spin-off segments.
  • TLC must donate at least $10,000 to a domestic violence nonprofit or charity for every past, current, or future cast member that is arrested on domestic abuse claims following their appearance on the 90 Day Fiance franchise.
  • Follow ups with mental health professionals must be required for every main cast member who has appeared on the show. This must be conducted in a safe environment without their partner present.
  • All past, current, and future cast members are entitled to a determined sum of money following official statements of domestic abuse. This must be enough to reasonably cover aid in legal fees, rehabilitation, a flight to their home country,  and basic living expenses.

This cannot continue. As viewers, we will not accept this handling of persons prone to domestic abuse. Television entertainment value does not triumph basic human ethics. Please sign to make sure we, as viewers, are not contributing in any way to a cycle of domestic violence.

The goal for this petition is at least 1,000 signatures in 30 days. I believe we can have even more than that. Please sign and share so we can make as big of an impact as possible. Thank you.
