The Issue
On August 30, 2026, a one-year-old miniature donkey named HeeHaw was shot and killed in his own pasture in Cedartown, Georgia — by a police officer who had entered the property searching for a missing child.
HeeHaw was bottle-raised by his owner, Hannah Israel, from the day he was born. He had never been aggressive. Anyone who knows donkeys knows they run toward people out of curiosity and trust — and that trust got him killed. When the officer's taser didn't stop him, the officer drew his gun and fired.
Then the officers left — without even telling Hannah where her baby's body lay. She and a child searched acres of dark pasture that night to find him themselves.
The police chief admits body camera footage of the shooting exists. He has watched it himself. He refuses to release it. The fire department's drone recorded the incident too — that footage is also being withheld from the public.
The officer is on administrative leave. No criminal charges have been filed. On September 11, 2026, Hannah filed a federal civil-rights lawsuit (Israel v. Garner, N.D. Georgia) alleging unlawful entry, unlawful search, unlawful seizure, and destruction of property. She is demanding a jury trial.
This isn't just about one donkey. Across America, family animals are shot by law enforcement with little oversight and almost never any accountability. HeeHaw's death was captured on camera — and the public is being denied the truth.
We, the undersigned, demand:
1. That the Cedartown Police Department immediately release the body camera footage and the fire department's drone footage of the shooting.
2. That the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division review this shooting as a potential deprivation of rights under color of law.
3. That Congress exercise oversight of law enforcement's use of lethal force against domestic and farm animals — and strengthen federal accountability when officers kill family animals.
HeeHaw was a baby who only ever knew kindness. He deserved better. Hannah deserves answers. And the public deserves the footage.
