LGBTQ+ & Sex Worker 100 Day Memo To STL Mayor Tishaura Jones

LGBTQ+ & Sex Worker 100 Day Memo To STL Mayor Tishaura Jones

The Issue

The MO Ho Justice Coalition is a statewide collective of individuals, organizations, and community members fighting for the care and well-being of sex workers in the Missouri region, with a focus on Kansas City and St. Louis metro areas.

We seek for Mayor Jones to fulfill her campaign platform promise to decriminalize sex work. We look forward to tangible steps within the first 100 Days of her administration and we intend to partner to hold the administration accountable as it moves forward.

To fulfill her commitments to decriminalize and destigmatize sex work and build a St. Louis that protects our LGBTQ+ Community, we would like to see Mayor Jones to do the following:

  • Decriminalize and destigmatize sex work.
  • End misgendering and deadnaming in policing, record collections, and interactions with sex workers and LGBTQ+ people.
  • Commit funding to develop community safety networks, classes, and other alternatives to police that support real safety.
  • Fight state policies that threaten the rights of LGBTQ+ people.
  • Prioritize funding affordable, accessible LGBTQ+ & Sex Worker-Friendly Housing
  • End Patterns of Adverse Healthcare for Sex Workers, and Queer & Trans communities.

Indigo Hann, a healthcare worker at The T, a Coalition Partner, and Co-Founder of MO Ho Justice says “We stand by Mayor Jones’ assertion that equity and inclusion ‘require[s] consistent commitment from leadership to confront uncomfortable topics.’ We intend to equip her with the community insight she needs to honor her campaign commitments to sex workers. For sex working constituents, criminalization and stigma are more than political talking points—our safety and livelihoods are at stake, and we expect our leaders to take these issues as seriously as we do.”

Coalition Coordinator Miyonnee Hickman shared “If you’re not allowing people to work peacefully without police harassment, then you’re stopping people from living and surviving. We want to get the justice that’s been long overdue for not just sex workers, but also the LGBTQ+ community. We hope to partner with the Mayor’s office to really get this right.”
