Time to Hold GlobalFoundries Accountable for Its PFAS Pollution
Time to Hold GlobalFoundries Accountable for Its PFAS Pollution
The Issue
There are many Superfund sites listed by Environmental Protection Agency around the GlobalFoundries VT plant. VT has been and will continue to be afflicted by serious toxic chemical pollution. Although the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation knows the fact that GlobalFoundries pollutes Winooski River and Lake Champlain, they have no plan to address the pollution. Instead, they continue to allow GlobalFoundries to discharge PFAS pollutants to the river and lake.
These substances pose many serious health risks to inhabitants, including respiratory issues, learning disabilities, and potential long-term illnesses like cancer.
To protect people's health and stop the environment from being polluted, we must act now:
1.The federal and state governments should require GlobalFoundries to report publicly its discharges of all PFAS.
2.The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation should require GlobalFoundries to treat the PFAS pollutants discharged into Winooski River and to compensate influenced residents.
3.The federal government should use CHIPS ACT funds to support research and development to reduce and eventually phase out the use of PFAS in semiconductor production, informed by mandatory public reporting and citizen science in communities with chip fabs.
4.GlobalFoundries should set up a fund for cancer patients affected by PFAS pollution. It should take the responsibility to treat cancer patients by offering subsidies to local communities, especially patients living close to Essex Junction.
