The Issue
TIME magazine released an article on June 20, 2014 called "The Problem with Pitbulls". This article attempts to create public panic and unnecessary fear.
Across the US, there are thousands of people and pitbull rescue organizations dedicating their time, effort, money and resources to clean up the war zone that has been left by irresponsible dog owners and a lack of government funding. Thousands of people open their homes, their hearts and their pocketbooks to help these dogs who have, in many cases, been intentionally physically abused, overbred, neglected and abandoned. This means being tied to a table in the basement of house with no access to the outdoors, to water or food; having battery acid poured on their back; being bred consecutively 10+ times; having fireworks strapped to them and set on fire as a 4th of July prank.
This TIME article attempts to threaten the major efforts and progress of these people and organizations. Pitbull abuse is a major issue and articles like this only support the public perception that pitbulls are throwaway animals and therefore can be treated with such abuse and neglect.
The author of the TIME article used information that was not properly researched, took testimony from biased individuals, was contradictory in her opinions and did not cite information or interviews with a single responsible dog owner who has trained their dog properly, cares for them properly and has neutered and/or spayed them.
A recant is not enough.
A new article highlighting the TRUTH is needed. Millions of people read TIME magazine. To influence them into believing that all pitbulls are vicious and violent is a public health hazard and creates unnecessary panic.
