The Issue

We, the undersigned, call for the immediate release of Dr. John F. Johnson, also known as Grandmaster Jay, from the federal prison in Ashland, KY. Dr. Johnson, a dedicated activist, veteran, and community leader, has been unjustly incarcerated based off of the draconian penalties imposed by the1994 Biden Crime Bill, and we ask that justice be served in his case.

Dr. Johnson has been a vocal advocate for the protection and empowerment of Black communities across the United States. As the founder of the Not F***ing Around Coalition (NFAC), a legally armed self-defense organization, he has worked tirelessly to uphold the constitutional rights of marginalized individuals and ensure their safety in the face of systemic injustice.

Dr. Johnson, while preparing for a lawful protest to garner transparency for Breonna Taylor, was targeted the night of Sept. 4, 2020, in Louisville Kentucky by elements of Louisville Metro PD and the FBI, for shining his flashlight at what was perceived as a threat from a rooftop.  He was arrested three months later and convicted in 2022 under more than dubious circumstances.  Despite his commitment to peace, justice, and community empowerment, Dr. Johnson was unfairly & unjustly targeted and prosecuted by government agencies. His conviction and subsequent sentencing are a clear indication of a broader pattern of legal overreach against outspoken leaders who challenge the status quo. His case is a miscarriage of justice, and his continued imprisonment is an affront to the principles of fairness and equality under the law.

We stand firm in our belief that:

1.  Dr. Johnson's conviction was politically motivated and unjust.
2.  His sentencing was disproportionately severe per the Biden Crime Bill and does not align with the facts of the case.
3.  His incarceration serves as an attempt to silence voices that advocate for self-defense and civil rights.
4.  He has served his country as a veteran and continues to serve his community as a leader and role model.

We ask:

1.  The immediate review and pardoning of Dr. Johnson’s conviction.
2.  His unconditional release from federal prison.
3.  The restoration of all his rights.
4.  The cessation of legal persecution against activists advocating for constitutional rights.

Justice must be applied equally to all citizens, regardless of their race, political stance, or advocacy work. We urge President Trump & the Department of Justice to take swift action to rectify this grave injustice and ensure that Dr. John F. Johnson is granted the freedom he rightfully deserves.
