Time for a rethink at Robin Hood Island!

Time for a rethink at Robin Hood Island!
The Issue
Concerned members of Birmingham's Hall Green social media website "Streetlife" and others are calling on Councillor Stewart Stacey, Cabinet Member for Transport and Roads, to formally request that Birmingham City Council undertakes a comprehensive review of the design and traffic arrangements at Robin Hood Island in Hall Green. We ask that they work with partners, including Solihull MBC, to identify alternative traffic management solutions to improve the flow of traffic; minimise the queues that appear to be caused by the location and sequencing of traffic lights and pedestrian crossings, especially at peak times; and to improve the safety of the whole junction for both road users and pedestrians.
WHY IS THIS A PROBLEM?
The current road design of the roundabout, where six roads converge, is considered by most users to be outdated and unsuitable with today’s ever increasing number of vehicles. The current traffic signal system often means the route around the island is dangerously blocked by vehicles waiting for lights to change and long queues of vehicles, worse at peak traffic times. Three narrow lanes are attributed to be the reason drivers are often in wrong lane for exiting. Some drivers avoid the route, considering driving there intimidating and too frightening.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF NOTHING IS DONE
If nothing is done to improve this situation accidents will continue, the needs of pedestrians and drivers left to suffer and the atmosphere unduly polluted until eventually it is realised a change is vital to re-design the traffic system on this part of South Birmingham's road network to be fitting for the 21st century and not the horse and cart as originally designed.
