Open Minnesota's Small Gyms

Open Minnesota's Small Gyms
The Issue
As an owner of one of the smaller gyms here in Minnesota, I am deeply saddened to be told that I cannot open my place of business this 1st of June. Speaking for the many similar boutique-style gyms in this state, we were already prepared to ensure a safe environment. We are indeed very different than the big box gyms with which we are being associated. The populations of our gym is ~200 members. Our entire gym is 4000 square feet. We usually average 10 people or less per class. Each member has their own set of equipment during a class that can be disinfected between classes. Since we don’t use machines such as the big box gyms do, it allows for better practices of sanitation. The structure of our building is such that we have four large bay doors that we keep open during most of our classes during the spring, summer, and early fall months weather permitting. We have been and will continue to tirelessly maintain the protocols regarding cleaning, sanitation, class sizes, programming, and equipment. Moreover, we have a clientele highly conscious of care for their fellow members.
To be sure, as documented regularly, physical well-being in addition to social welfare has an enormous influence on one’s ability to minimize the effects of this virus. My clients, and those of smaller intimate-style fitness centers, have been a source of both body and mind steadiness in the past. We provide a home away from home. We are like family. Denying us the ability to work out, and for that matter, workout with dear and caring friends hinders us both from a physical and mental state.
It should also be mentioned that we train a number of active first responders at our gym whose jobs and livelihood depend on their on physical and mental preparedness. These are the people that you have deemed essential.
In our current state, bodies are atrophying, immune systems are becoming less efficient, and social anchors are being dislodged. This is preventable!
We implore you, Governor Walz, to allow us to open the small gyms in Minnesota and to enable our athletes to take control of their mental and physical health. Please listen to us and work WITH us, not against us. The stress of a quarantined state is debilitating to people’s mental health. We have the health and well-being of Minnesota in mind.
