Save The Humanities In Our Society

The Issue

The humanities is a collection of subjects and majors that include English, world languages, history, art, theatre, orchestra, politics, etc. These classes are essential and relevant in our daily lives, and are important for our schools and universities. However, the recent rise of STEM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Mathematics) caused a decline of jobs that relate to the humanities, their job openings, and school subjects and electives. So far, over 23 million public and private schools do not have any arts, musical, or theatre electives. Since the frugal years of 2016, the humanities job openings have also decreased, going down by 20.61%, which is significant in our economy and our education. In addition, secretary of education Betsy Devos and the Trump administration have sought to eliminate the NEH (National Endowment of the Humanities) so that the state and federal government can fund and support more towards STEM education, and less to the humanities.

Though the evidence to prove how the limited government funding on humanities affects the future generation has yet to be conclusive, I believe we should address and spread awareness on this issue because the humanities is still a relevant idea in our society, and the government needs to recognize this issue. Students and workers in  America deserve the right to education, and the right to learn. Please sign this petition to save the humanities in our education.
