Give GUHSD Seniors In-Person, Cap and Gown Graduations!

Give GUHSD Seniors In-Person, Cap and Gown Graduations!

The Issue

During these unprecedented times, many things are uncertain and up in the air as we try to navigate through something that many of us have never been through before. There are many things we are all missing out on, but one of those should not be our high school seniors and their families, missing out on one of the most important milestones in someone’s life, high school graduation.

Since there is a light at the end of the tunnel, I wanted to take this opportunity to implore the Grossmont Union High School District to give our kids their hard fought graduation! This is not only something they’ve worked towards for about 13 years, this is something that us parents have worked for and dreamt of their entire lives.  That official send off into adulthood.

During these times, it is definitely important to stay safe and healthy, and I believe we can still do that while sending our kids off right!  Once some restrictions are lifted, I believe we can hold an in person, cap and gown graduation/s.  There are several options we can explore depending on the size of crowds allowed at the time being.

1.) One ceremony with all students in attendance, 2 guests allowed per graduating Senior.

2.) Breaking up the Class of 2020 into several groups, 2 guests per graduating Senior, and staggering several ceremonies to decrease crowd size.

-Limiting guests will keep crowd size down and allow for social distancing practices.

-All those in attendance could also be required to wear some sort of a face covering/mask.

-Seeing as how how schools have large fields, students can be spaced out to assist with social distancing.

-Each school can livestream so other family members can check it out while it’s happening!

These are just some ideas, and I’m sure something doable can be created to hold graduations and keep everyone safe!

As this is an optional event, if there are those who still feel on edge, which is understandable, they have the choice to attend or not.

Please make this happen! These kids deserve it, us family members deserve it! Give us something. After all, what are we doing all of this hunkering down and masking up for? To LIVE, and not just to be breathing beings, but to live and share in life’s special moments together, to be happy, to celebrate, to know that there’s something worth fighting for!
