Terminate Joanna Hope Lai's TikTok account and other Internet platforms.
The Issue
Introducing Joanna Hope Lai. According to her personal Tiktok account, which documents the last nine months, Joanna Hope Lai has been demonstrating openly racist commentary about people in Hawai'i and what is nowadays referred to as "colonizer behavior" towards those people since leaving the San Francisco area. While she currently has no professional affiliations and refers to herself as a life and career coach, her problematic behavior has been consistent and ongoing during this period of time.
Another user who made this video does an excellent job summarizing what is wrong with Ms.Lai's actions. Reposted on Twitter in case it's taken down. What started as encouraging people to move to during the COVID-19 pandemic while numbers were at their highest, quickly turned into creating and spreading provocative stereotypes about the people and culture in order to increase her metrics. Joanna herself replied to a commenter asking about these metrics writing, "Part of the process is trying different types of content," which, to her, justifies this behavior.
We believe her main motivation is self-recognition and possibly greed as she advertises herself as a life coach and presumably wants money for it. She does not reveal any current professional affiliations. A majority of the commentary on Ms. Lai's video posts express disdain and frustration with her viewpoints and failure to adapt to constructive criticism. It is the hope of many that her public platform be removed so she will no longer be able to spread misinformation for her own personal gain. Additionally, past and prospective employers should be aware of Ms. Lai's unapologetic characteristics should she inquire about professional opportunities or references.
Overall, her racism is disguised as a love for Hawai'i, something many foreigners do not see past. The difficulty with her viral videos is that people from around the world overshadow local backlash in the comments because since foreigners generally do not know much about Hawai'i, it's hard for them to detect the falsehoods and they only recognize her excitement for sharing. While it may seem odd that so many people are willing to accept her words as fact when she so clearly admits she is a recent transplant, it is also strange that they would trust this woman at all. She is self-titled tech dropout, who asserts she developed PTSD (a clinical term) from reading comments of locals trying to hold her accountable for her actions, citing the importance of mental health. Seems like there's no popular topic off limits to use to try to gain attention.
Sadly, there are some locals who also encourage her, including two-time Grammy Award winning Hawaiian singer/songwriter Kalani Pe'a who wrote in a now deleted comment saying that because there exist Hawaiians and locals who exploit themselves, we should allow and promote the further exploitation by foreigners like Joanna Hope Lai. While others make valid arguments about the importance of mental health and being kind to newcomers, none are sound when put in the context of microaggressions that perpetuate the cycle of systemic racism. We can only think to characterize this behavior as seeking "colonizer validation" in the same way someone with Stockholm syndrome might develop positive feelings toward their captors and sympathy for their causes and goals.
We hope you will retain this information and consider the majority position regarding Joanna Hope Lai.
