The Issue
My life was turned upside down in August 2024 when my husband was killed in a head-on crash caused by a drowsy driver. The California Highway Patrol ruled it as a felony, but disappointingly, the District Attorney opted to classify it as a misdemeanor. As a result, the driver – a person whose reckless decision-making took my husband's life – may never face meaningful consequences. This injustice is further amplified when we see that a thief often receives more severe punishment than someone who takes a life due to their irresponsible actions. It's a painful reality that I and many others have to live with.
Unfortunately, my story is not unique. California’s lenient approach to dealing with drivers under the influence of drugs, drowsiness, or alcohol has resulted in countless lives being lost. Every year, innocent people are slain not by wild accidents or uncontrollable circumstances, but by the careless and deliberate choices of others. This severely undermines the safety and well-being of our families, friends, and communities.
In 2020, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that nearly 10,142 people were killed in DUI-related crashes across the United States. California remains among the states with the highest statistics, a dubious distinction that serves as a wake-up call for change. Additionally, drug-impaired and drowsy driving contribute significantly to this haunting number, yet the legal repercussions in California often do not reflect the gravity of these offenses.
It is high time we demand stricter penalties and more stringent enforcement measures for those who choose to operate vehicles while under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or gross fatigue. By doing so, we can deter these offenders and claim justice for the families devastated by their actions.
We call upon the California State Legislature and Governor Gavin Newsom to tighten the legal ramifications for drug, alcohol, and drowsy driving, ensuring that those responsible for such tragedies are held accountable. Initiatives should include mandatory minimum sentencing, rehabilitation programs, and increased public awareness campaigns.
Our roads should be a safe space where our loved ones can travel without fear of not returning home. Stand with me in urging our lawmakers to draw the line and protect our communities from further unnecessary grief. Please sign this petition to create a safer future for all Californians.
