Bring Back Bomber Jackets TCC
Bring Back Bomber Jackets TCC
Unfortunately, my school has decided to remove bomber jackets from the system as of 2021. We will now get a mediocre jumper that no one wants.
We have not been given any REASONABLE, JUSTIFIED OR INSOLVABLE REASONS as to why the jackets are not in place. No parents were told, no students were told and as comments were removed on a post via social media, the community hasn’t been notified until a post was made on the 14th of August 2020 in our school Beacon which is the school weekly newsletter. This claimed that jackets are being associated with "occasions where Victoria Police have come to the College looking for students wearing a bomber jacket". If the police are coming to our school because they see the TCC logo on a jacket, they reason them to be in year 12, now they will be reasoning that they could range from year 7 to 12 wearing that badge and blazer. Putting a total bad reputation on all years. So this excuse of a bomber jacket signifying crime is just as common to occur in a blazer. They also mention in this segment that "Too often students in Year 10 and 11 are not replacing their worn out and undersized blazers which are completely unacceptable, as they are awaiting the Year 12 bomber jacket." To make the excuse that Year 10's and 11's wait to get a bomber jacket and so don't buy a new blazer is an error of fact. At Thomas Carr College you are required to wear your blazer every day with the appropriate uniform. When you breach these standards you will visit the procedures of consequence that follow. They say this as if they allow students to wear the uniform inappropriately without a consequence. Going off the fact that Thomas Carr acts on their students when the uniform is abused, in year 12 you do not receive your bomber jacket straight away. It is usually received on Thomas Carr Day which is in March. This means that in year 12, the blazer is held as the appropriate uniform until the bomber jacket is in place. Saying that, if they are really concerned about the uniform and act on their set procedures then there should not be any "worn out and undersized blazers" in the first place.
Other than this announcement, we did not hear about anything prior besides the first online assembly where we were only told that the current (2020) year 12’s will be getting it due to COVID. That alone is an unfair and unjust statement as we still have multiple years and magis students who are or will be going through VCE if they aren’t already. The class of 2021 is also the final class to carry the previous red uniform so if anything were to change with an item, it should be done like the previous Principal figured, if changes happen to the uniform, it will be after that generation. Not to be giving us this sort of notice as of 1 year.
When we are going through the school system, we talk to the people we are supposed to and just get put down because they either don’t know themselves or cannot make an actual difference anyway. In the end, the school just sees us as dull-witted teenagers. Our student representative council no longer has a voice that is being heard. All we ask is for the Bomber Jackets, as it has been a tradition and highlight to year 12 ever since us primary students found out bomber jackets for the graduating years existed. There’s nothing better than the moments you share as a year level in collecting the bomber jackets and having the typical photoshoot from it with your peers, it not only makes you feel like a full-fledged year 12 but is also almost a piece of a new beginning and start to your future career.
It causes no harm and is a well-deserved prize that we end up paying for anyway. When we ask “why” we get a comment from a teacher and then we will rebut the issue but then we face another apparent issue with the bomber jackets. So, in the end, we are just going back and forth with these never-ending claims that if it’s continued, will never end and result in a lost battle for the Thomas Carr College Community.
Our College Vision for this year is “Be Strong and of Good Courage” from the Deuteronomy 31:6. So as a whole community we want to stand together with strength and courage to not take away something so simple and meaningful. It’s just a piece of clothing, it has no social impact to the school but giving the year 12 students something to look forward to during the hardship of Exams.
The current year 11s also believe that it was just disrespectful to us and the rest of the school to highlight the moment of the current year 12 cohort looking “super-stylish” on the media with bomber jackets on and still find a way to promote such thing even though it will not be continued. Why promote something you’re so against? However, this post affected more than the students at the school but the parents as well. We have parents posting questions and comments that were removed on Instagram but some remain on Facebook. Why delete such questions and statements? Is it shame or not even having an actual reason to respond?
The goal of this petition is to make our Principal realize that we are taking a stand for what we believe in. The school won’t tell us the reason, which delays this further and makes it easier for them to remove it overall. It is not as simple as taking a cup of water out of the ocean which causes no overall effect. Taking this away not only makes us all realize that we have lost a part of ourselves that makes us year 12 students, but also that we are the first to become part of this damaged culture that is the new Thomas Carr College. The new damaged culture that doesn’t even utilize a student's voice, the damaged culture that continues to push us further away from it as we know it’s not moral but get forced to stay as if it’s the right thing to do.
We just want our Bomber Jackets back. We’re not asking for much at all. At least give us this until you have enough reasons that prove to be unsolvable and to be at a point of no compromise.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. We hope you agree with our cause and will sign this petition.
