Let’s end Breed Specific Legislation in apartment complexes .
The Issue
What is BSL?
Breed specific legislation(BSL) is designed to place restrictions on ownership of certain breeds of dogs.
A breed ban usually requires that all dogs of a certain appearance (targeted breed) be removed from the county, city, state, or Province.
Breed-specific restrictions may require an owner of the said targeted breed do any of the following or all.
1.Purchase liability insurance ranging from $100,000-$500,000
2.Muzzle the dog of said breed while in public
2.Mandatory Spay or neuter the breed in question
3.The breed in question may not leave the owners premises
4.The dog must be contained in a kennel with specific requirements (6' high chain link walls, a lid, and concrete floors)
5.Place signs on the outside of the residence where the dog lives with vicious dog on them
6.Make the dog wear a vicious dog tag or other identifying marker
7.Some county municipals require you to buy a special license for each dog ranging from $100-$200 per year
My apartment complex breed restrictions list is one whole page long . I had to give a family member ( my dog) to the shelter because they threatened to evict me because he was a bully. That should not happen and that is NOT okay . My baby was the most sweetest dog you would have ever met and he would not have hurt a fly !
We are asking when considering approval for these type of dogs, instead of rejecting them based on their breed name, to instead look at a few other things like:
1. Pet Interview - see for yourself how the dog acts and reacts to people and other dog's surrounding them. Like a lot of breeds, they may not like other animals, but if they aren't trying to kill themselves to get to another dog, what's the problem?
2. Pet's Credentials - Did they come from a reputable rescue group? What training have they accomplished?
3. Owner Responsibility - Not all owner's of this breed are "thugs" - a lot of owner's of this breed are educated, responsible, family ortiented people. And they want their furry family members to be accepted for their character and not based on their face. Is that too much to ask for?
I'm not asking to "remove breed restrictions" indefinetly, but to put forth an approval process that will at least give the breed a chance.
