This needs to stop getting normalised - it has almost been 6 years now.
The Issue
I do not prefer to go by my real name, so call me Moom. I am a fan of a K-pop group named SHINee, in which the fandom would be referred to as Shawols. (singular: Shawol)
There's a member that is remembered dearly as Jonghyun, who passed away back in 2017. It had been noted that the fandom has been receiving a lot of targeted harassment from a lot of people, but most noticeably those in the BTS fandom. Since it had happened the very moment the news was dropped, many Shawols never had the chance to heal from the, at most, traumatic experience as it may be their first time experiencing death by suicide, or simply just death as a whole. People have reported that they cannot talk about Jonghyun at all, even if it's in a positive light as they would receive messages such as "isn't the guy dead" or any insensitive comments mentioning his passing, when the posts would have nothing to do with it, and is just uploaded to keep his memory.
We are currently at 2023 and the harassment is still going on. Many people are reporting that some of the people may also be Shawols attacking other Shawols. Most of the harassers tend to be between the ages of 13 to 24, with some being young Generation Z and Alpha. This is the type of inappropriate behaviour that shouldn't be normalised, but it seems as if there are more Shawols that is justifying people simply making posts just like how others would make posts about their biases.
This is clearly discrimination and users and should be against every social media's guidelines, even if it's not considered as such. Targeted harassment can be recognised whether if it's through race, gender, nationality or interests. Since SHINee (or K-pop as a whole) is an interest, this means that they deserve to be just as punished as those who are accused of hate speech just because they spoke up for what's right.
By signing this petition, you can stand up for a 6-year battle of bringing our power back, begging all social platforms to start taking down posts, comments and profiles for simply harassing those based on interests. They matter just as much as any other issue and there's no excuse to ignore it if the problem persists.
