#ThirdLanguageisSports - Make Sports The Mandatory Third Language in Indian Schools
The Issue
A National Call: #ThirdLanguageisSports
As a firm believer in the transformative power of sports, I write this earnest plea to the Government of India to reimagine our education system—one that not only nurtures academic excellence but also builds character, health, and resilience through sports.
I have personally witnessed how sports instill life-defining values: discipline, teamwork, focus, and perseverance. These are not mere extracurricular benefits—they are foundational life skills. Yet, in our current educational structure, sports are too often relegated to an optional activity, treated as a luxury rather than a necessity.
To change this narrative, I propose a bold and necessary reform: recognize Sports as the ‘Third Language’ in schools, from kindergarten through Grade 12. Just like languages and mathematics, sports must be treated with equal importance—with structured class time, a trained cadre of physical educators, and a curriculum that evolves with age and ability.
This is not just an aspirational idea—it is backed by strong evidence. A 2019 study by the All India Council for Physical Education (AICPE) and National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) found that schools which integrated sports into daily routines reported a 25% improvement in student attendance, a 30% reduction in behavioral issues, and significantly higher levels of engagement and academic performance. These are Indian children in Indian schools—proving that the model works in our context.
Furthermore, according to UNESCO's 2022 report, India’s school dropout rate stands at a worrying 47%, with disinterest in the curriculum being a major contributor. Sports-integrated education can directly address this, offering a more dynamic and inclusive learning experience, especially for underrepresented and rural children.
Recognizing sports formally can also unlock viable career pathways—in athletics, coaching, physiotherapy, sports psychology, and beyond—fields that remain undervalued despite their growing relevance in our economy and global standing.
This is not merely an education reform—it is a nation-building initiative. Sports nurture a healthier, more focused, and socially resilient generation, ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
We urge the Government of India to lead this change. Make Sports a core subject—a ‘Third Language’—that every Indian child is entitled to learn and excel in.
