Third party election advertiser accountability

The Issue

Canada's federal and provincial elections are increasingly being influenced by third-party entities exploiting loopholes in campaign financing. These entities, often cloaked behind generic names such as 'Protecting Canada,' run attack ads targeting specific parties.

This petition does not seek to infringe upon the rights of third parties to run their ad campaigns. Instead, it advocates for the implementation of rules that level the playing field and ensure transparency regarding the identities of the advertisers.

1.     Third-party advertisers must disclose the identities of key decision-makers and major donors associated with the ad campaign.

2.     Third-party advertisers must provide an updated list of donations at the initiation of their ad campaign and continue to update this list monthly until the conclusion of the campaign.

3.     Donations received from foreign entities must be clearly indicated and highlighted in all donation declarations.

4.     The value of negative ads should be counted against the campaign limits of the parties benefiting from these ads, proportional to the total number of seats they hold. For instance, the current negative ad by 'Protecting Canada' attacking the Conservative Party of Canada benefits the LPC (153 seats), BQ (33 seats), NDP (24 seats), and Green Party (2 seats). With 3 independents and 3 vacancies, the value of this campaign should be allocated as follows: LPC=70.18%, BQ=15.14%, NDP=11.01%, Green Party=0.92%."

This petition aims to promote fairness and transparency in Canadian elections by holding third-party advertisers accountable for their actions. By implementing these rules, we can ensure a more equitable and transparent political landscape for all Canadians.
