They Were Trapped, Starving, and Covered in Feces – Justice for 61 Abused Animals in Iowa

They Were Trapped, Starving, and Covered in Feces – Justice for 61 Abused Animals in Iowa
The Issue
In a heartbreaking discovery in Fairfield, Iowa, 61 animals—including 38 dogs, 10 cats, and 13 small animals—were rescued from horrific neglect inside a private home.
They were found trapped in overcrowded cages, living in filth, without adequate food or water, and covered in feces.
Police described the conditions as “neglectful, unsanitary, and hazardous” not just for the animals, but for any human living there. Two individuals—Ellen Marie Telleen and Krysta Marie Telleen—were arrested and charged with 48 counts of animal neglect. They have since posted bond and been released.
These animals endured what no living being ever should. They suffered in silence, likely for weeks or even months, in conditions no different from a prison of pain. They are now in the care of animal welfare organizations—but the story cannot end with their rescue.
We demand justice.
We call on The Jefferson County Prosecutor’s Office to pursue maximum legal penalties for the individuals charged, if convicted.
The City of Fairfield and the State of Iowa to strengthen animal neglect laws, especially for cases involving mass cruelty.
Local authorities to ensure transparency in the medical care, rehabilitation, and adoption outcomes for all 61 animals.
These animals were victims of cruelty and abandonment, and the community—and the state—must send a clear message: neglect on this scale will not be tolerated.
Their suffering deserves to be acknowledged in the courtroom. Their recovery deserves to be supported in the public eye. And the people responsible must be held fully accountable.
