The foundation of our society is made up of vital professionals like teachers, firefighters, nurses, and others. They sacrifice their personal safety for the welfare of others, save lives, and mold our communities. However, their pay frequently falls short of the vital duties they provide. 

It's difficult to overlook the enormous sums of money that influencers get from making videos, even while discussions about the digital economy are sparked by the possible ban of TikTok. Even while their labor is valuable in and of itself, it is depressing to see the huge pay gap between the millions of dollars that influencers can make and the meager wages of vital employees. 

The Harsh Reality

With the recent fires devastating Los Angeles, think of the courageous firefighters who risk their lives daily battling massive flames to protect lives, homes, and property. According to a quick search, their salaries range from $56,972 to $94,390 per year. Similarly, California's teachers, who dedicate their careers to shaping future generations and inspiring change, earn an average of $56,309 annually. Nurses, who worked tirelessly on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic, often endure long, grueling hours and immense stress, yet their vital contributions are compensated with an average annual salary of $89,000 in California.

In stark contrast, TikTok influencers can earn an average of $131,874 annually, highlighting a troubling disparity in how society values essential professions compared to digital content creators. These figures underscore the urgent need to reevaluate and advocate for fair compensation for the workers who truly keep our communities running.

It's important to note that this isn't about disparaging TikTok influencers or the effort they put into their content. Many influencers work hard to build their platforms and create engaging videos. However, when a 10-second clip can generate earnings comparable to—or even exceeding—a full 9-to-5 job, it raises questions about the stark imbalance in how we value different types of work. Essential workers, who dedicate their lives to protecting, teaching, and healing, deserve compensation that reflects the critical impact they have on our society.

Essential workers should be compensated according to the value they add to society. Future generations are inspired and educated by teachers. Firefighters risk their lives to protect ours. In times of greatest need, nurses offer support and care.
