Dear Supporters, It has been a difficult week. On Sunday 27 August, Grandpa Kamal broke the record for the European Union citizen jailed for the longest time ever in Iran. Yesterday Saturday 3 September, he turned 77 years old, his 6th birthday in Evin prison away from family. Unfortunately, this weekend our news has got even worse. Grandpa Kamal has just been diagnosed with developing cataracts in his eyes. This diagnosis got missed at both his November 2015 and May 2016 medicals (we always doubted the quality of these) and only got picked up when he was chatting to my stepmum on the phone recently and she expressed concern and asked him to get his eyes checked. He will have to have an operation in both eyes to stop him going blind. We have been assured that he will be treated quickly by Tehran’s medical experts. But as we’ve learnt with all the broken promises to date, actions speak louder than words. Going blind in Evin prison would be shocking. We survived the week with the love and support of friends, family and you our supporters. On Thursday 1 September, friends and family gathered outside the Iranian embassy in London singing “Free Kamal Foroughi! Free Grandpa! Happy Birthday!”. We handed in our Change petition that you all signed, and also handed in over 2,000 birthday messages of support sent electronically by you via Amnesty International. Photos of the protest can be found here: www.twitter.com/FreeKForoughi And click here to see Channel 4 coverage of our singing Happy Birthday Grandpa in English and farsi: http://bcove.me/43i324dm Thursday was also the day that British Airways restarted their flights to Tehran. If Grandpa Kamal’s terrible detention had never happened, he would have been delighted at this development as a proud British-Iranian who used to fly frequently between London and Tehran, often with BA. But, we cannot ignore the facts…although BA seems to want to. On its website BA describes the virtues of Iran (and there are many – most people are so kind and hospitable; the country is full of rich history) without any mention of the risks. It does not even point to the Foreign Office website which states prominently: “There’s a risk that British nationals and British/Iranian dual nationals could be arbitrarily detained in Iran. In such cases the Foreign Office has serious concerns that the subsequent judicial process falls below international standards.” If you share our concerns that BA’s crew or passengers could suffer the same fate as Grandpa Kamal, please can you write to press.office@ba.com and investor.relations@iairgroup.com (the investor relations team of BA’s parent company IAG) and ask them to communicate more clearly the arbitrary detention risks faced in flying to Iran. Please also ask BA to lobby Iran for Grandpa Kamal’s release and speedy cataract operations. Many thanks for your ongoing support, Kamran and family
