Tell These UK Venues: Don't Let Whale Killers Perform

Tell These UK Venues: Don't Let Whale Killers Perform

The Issue

Tyr is the most famous band from the Faroe Islands, an archipelago famous for its beautiful fjords while infamous for the bloodbaths they become. Every year, an average of 900 pilot whales, Atlantic white-sided dolphins, and other species of cetaceans are spotted by fishermen, driven to shore with terrifying sounds from loud boats, beached, and slaughtered in among the cruelest ways possible: a lance severs their spines before they are decapitated with knives. Juveniles and pregnant females are not spared, with multiple instances of fetuses being cut from the womb being documented, as entire families of these social creatures are wiped out in hours of brutality witnessed by other members of their family groups.

Tyr, in particular lead singer Heri Joensen, is no stranger to controversy, from his songs about Nazis to his expressing sympathy for a guitarist convicted of assaulting U.S. Capitol police on January 6th, 2021. In his songs, Joensen glorifies the killing of these dolphins while advocating for violence against activists who oppose the cruel, outdated, unnecessary slaughter. Not only that, but Joensen has actively participated in numerous slaughters and served as the de-facto ambassador of the Faroe Islands to justify this barbarism.

In his tours over the past few years, Joensen has seen multiple venues cancel his shows for concern over reputational damage, as his presence has almost always been met by protest in the nations like the United States and Germany. Now, Tyr has announced a tour of the UK in early March. As the UK is one of the most purportedly whale-and-dolphin-friendly nations on the planet, we the undersigned demand that the aforementioned other venues Tyr is scheduled to play at cancel the band's planned performances and deprive them of the opportunity to promote their animal cruelty around the nation.
