Save the Flood Plains National Park in Sri Lanka!
The Issue
The "Flood Plains National Park" is situated in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka. Beautiful forestland owing to some rear inhabitant species and diverse plants which can only be seen in the area of 67.0 sq ml.
The local village people have the necessity for a hospital which is understandable BUT building a road through the forest to reach the existing main hospital which is located 40Km away (on a motorway) somewhat perplexes me as the forecasted cost to build the sub road (just a 5Km) can easily be allocated to establish a modern hospital which is closer to the town centre. To cut the long story short it's learned that the demand is really coming from the local politicians rather than the constituencies themselves and why is that?? Because they fancy creating random development projects so that they would be profitable with commissions and other financial incentives and consciously renouncing to see the alternative solution in which the real "sustainability" is upheld.
This remarkable land is especially important for the long term survival of elephants and other species within the river Mahaweli catchment. The forest in Sri Lanka has been savagely destroyed in recent decades and only 20% remains to date. Needless to explain how much of this remaining land would dissipate to this politician's sketched road?? And, what would happen to these innocent species and natural biodiversity of this great plains?
