Stop the Decline of Coral Reef and Coastal Environments

The Issue

In the video above, Dr. Austin Bowden-Kerby talks about coral reefs at the frontline in the battle against the effects of climate change. He argues our reefs are the most sensitive system to its effects so if we can save the reefs we can save the planet.

Vic Ferguson, Executive Director of The World Federation of Coral Reef Conservation (WFCRC), shares these same feelings about our coral reefs. The WFCRC is aiming to stop the decline of coral reef and coastal environments. Globally, coral reefs provide habitats for a vast amount of marine species and protect coastlines from storms and erosion. Coral reefs provide pharmaceuticals and have great medicinal value. If we do not stop the decline of coral reef and coastal environments, the jobs, resources and income provided by these environments will simultaneously decline with these environments.

The mission of the WFCRC is Reef Conservation is to advance the understanding, use and conservation of coral reefs and coastal environments through an integrated program of excellence in data gathering/sharing, education, and outreach built upon active and long term partnerships with divers, conservationist, the science community and local island governments and stakeholders. The broad objectives are aimed at developing this effort and sustaining the same effort for long term.

It is imperative that we protect, restore, and conserve these biologically diverse marine ecosystems. Please share this petition with your colleagues active in the ocean conservation community.

Life began in the sea. We are all interdependent. Climate change and ocean acidification is the most urgent, local, national and international emergency we have ever faced. If the coal reefs can not survive, neither can we. No Coral = No People . Len Laycock, Vancouver, Canada.

We can still take action that will make a difference locally and globally. Join the movement. This is too important to all of us to ignore.

Biri Initiative is a non-profit organization, our aims are to promote local marine awareness and to offer marine education and research programs in the Philippines. Initiatives will range from beach clean up’s events to Crown of Thorns clean ups, we aim to raise community awareness of local marine issues to eco-tourism, internships where local and international students can volunteer to spend a week or two for studying our marine protected environment they can learn to dive at the same time whilst teaching them the fundamentals of conservation protection basic surveying techniques plus data collection and methods of surveying and grid mapping. We aim to facilitate other conservation organizations, local universities and local government projects by cooperating with them and making our findings, data and observations available to them for free.

Essential to the World, the OCEAN connects all of us! The coral reef is VITAL to the ecosystem of our planet. We must activate and unite in this effort, the WFCRC brings a new perspective to the table by creating a platform for ALL OCEAN CONSERVATION efforts to come together and share data, ideas, and inspiration in this movement. The Ocean provides so much for us, isn't it time we do the same?
