End Bird Captivity at The Westin Maui Resort and Spa, Ka'anapali
The Westin Maui Resort and Spa in Ka'anapali, Maui keeps flamingos and parrots captive on their premises. Flamingos are incredibly social beings with a need for large spaces to interact; here, they have only a small, enclosed shore where they stand day after day. In order for flamingos to stay in one location all day and not fly away, the Westin, like many hotels and zoos, clip their wings. Not only is this cruel, but it takes away their right to fly or live normally again. Parrots, who are known as "inherently wild" are brought out from another site each day to be placed in lonely cages until nightfall. Passersby often yell at the parrots which induces anxiety and trauma; even when slowly approaching them, the birds back away and squawk nervously, shifting from one leg to the other--a sign of extreme anxiety. According to PETA, "birds are smuggled into the United States more than any other animal" and removing a bird from their natural habitat destroys ecosystems and entire populations. Life in captivity is cruel for any animal; for birds it's usually a death sentence and a ticket to a life of loneliness, anxiety, and depression. These beautiful birds are not here for our use, to enjoy while walking up to a hotel room or a day at the beach, but are here to live safely in a nearby bird sanctuary committed to their care only. Please sign this petition to move both the flamingos and the parrots to a sanctuary; these birds deserve to live in a safe space where they aren't being used as objects for others to look at.
