Disney should donate the 50 million from Carrie Fisher's death to mental health causes.

The Issue

Disney took out a 50 million dollar insurance policy with Lloyd's of London on Carrie Fisher for if she were unable to complete the three films. [x]  Now that Carrie has passed away, the insurance policy will be triggered, and Disney is set to make a lot of money through her passing.

While Carrie Fisher will always be remember as Princess Leia, a legacy she herself appreciated. She also was, and perhaps more importantly, a best selling author seven times over, an author of scripts, and a coveted script doctor.  All can be found in more detail on her website. [x]  A website which also features mental health resources for those struggling [x], as Carrie was also an outspoken advocate for mental health.  Suffering from bipolar, and OCD [x].  She also struggled with addiction.  She talked openly about her struggles in her book and one woman show "Wishful Drinking" [x][x}  and in her book "Shockaholic."[x] And in turn, Carrie has become a sort of mental illness icon, (but as she said in "Wishful Drinking" about her mother being a gay icon, "You take your iconic status where you can get it.")

So we can not forget that Carrie was more than the beloved character of Princess Leia we all know and love.  She was also an incredible kind human being, inspiring those struggling with mental illness in a world where the topic is all too often silenced.

It seems a fitting tribute to Carrie if Disney were to donate the money from the triggered insurance policy to different mental health causes.

Charities which Carrie donated to in life that should be honoured through this money:

  • Midnight Mission: Carrie's worked with Midnight Mission[x], a Los Angeles based charity focused on helping the homeless regain control of their lives. [x
  • Pacer Center: Which Carrie nominated for her cause when Star Wars did an Omaze campaign back in 2015. [x] The Pacer Center helps children with disabilities achieve a higher quality of life. [x]
  • The Alzheimer's Association: Carrie was apparently listed on their records as a patron of their cause. They are dedicated to the elimination of Alzheimer's and the improvement of care and treatment. [x]
  • The Humanist Hub: This Harvard based group dedicated to the improvement of life through wellness and compassion. [x] They honoured Carrie with an their 10th Annual Lifetime Achievement award this past April. [x]
  • The Thalians: This was the favourite charity of Carrie's beloved mother Debbie Reynolds who passed away one day after her daughter.  Debbie was the President Emeritus of the organization, and worked closely with it her entire life. Their cause is raising awareness about mental health in order to eliminate stigma. [x]

Other Mental Health related causes which should be honoured with this money:

  • American Foundation for Suicide Prevention: Dedicated to preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy. [x] Carrie's own life was touched by suicide when she lost her friend Robin Williams to it back in 2014. [x]
  • Brain and Behaviour Research Foundation: A foundation dedicated to giving grants to those engaging in scientific research related to mental health. [x] While treatment for mental illness advanced greatly within Carrie's lifetime, we still have quite a ways to go.
  • International Bipolar Foundation:  The IBPF is a California based foundation dedicated to improving understanding and treatment. [x] Carrie struggled with bipolar disorder her entire life, offering a voice to an illness all too often not talked about.
  • International OCD Foundation: The IOCDF is dedicated to helping all individuals with OCD through increased understanding and effective treatment. [x] Carrie struggled with OCD, and she wore bandaids on her fingers throughout her entire life. [x
  • National Alliance on Mental Illness: Dedicated to building better lives for those suffering from mental illness. [x] Their free helpline was listed on Carrie's website. [x]
  • National Eating Disorder Association: NEDA is dedicated to supporting families of those struggling, improving access to care, increasing prevention and finding a cure. [x] Carrie sympathized with those struggling with eating disorders saying that she herself had "anorexic thinking." [x]
  • The Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador: EDFNL is a charity close to my heart and dedicated to the awareness and providing public services to those struggling with any type of eating disorder. [x] This charity is listed with the specific goal of achieving funds for a local life saving Eating Disorder inpatient unit. [x
  • Treatment Advocacy Center: A group dedicated to eliminating barriers to the treatment of mental illness. [x] While Carrie was privileged enough to afford and have access to treatment, this is not the reality for too many people.

"We have been given a challenging illness, and there is no other option than to meet those challenges.  Think of it as an opportunity to be heroic – not “I survived living in Mosul during an attack” heroic, but an emotional survival.  An opportunity to be a good example to others who might share our disorder.  That’s why it’s important to find a community – however small – of other bipolar people to share experiences and find comfort in the similarities" -Carrie Fisher, November 30th 2016.
