We NEED a HISPANIC Princess in a Disney MOVIE( NO Disney JR.)
The Issue
When I was a little girl and until now, as a girl of Hispanic/Latina descent, I have noticed that my people aren’t being fairly represented on Disney. For example, there is an evident absence of Latina representation within Disney princesses. Disney princesses have impacted my life since I was 5. I remember my mom showing me them and watching their movies with me. However, as the years went by, I felt the need to see a princess that shared the same values and culture as me. Many youths identify with the princesses, and it is important that they see themselves represented in these characters. Disney princesses have touched the hearts of every one of all ages. Disney has made, and continues making our lives magical. Nonetheless, we are in the 21st century and I don't understand how we still don't have a Hispanic Princess. Some people may disagree and say that we already have a Hispanic princess- Elena D' Alvalor. However, she is not considered to be a part of the official 12 Disney princess and her TV show was exclusively made for Disney Jr. Why can't the Hispanic community have a Hispanic Princess featured in a Disney movie for millions to see? Although there has been significant progress, there is still a need for more diversity and inclusion within Disney Princesses. The vast majority of the princesses are European. There is only one Black princess, one Native American princess, one Asian princess, and one Arabic princess. Disney, where is our Hispanic Princess?
If we reach our goal and Disney sees this, we expect to see a Hispanic Princess that represents the values of the Latinx/Hispanic community. For example, Hispanics are hardworking people, and when I say HARDWORKING... I truly mean it. They cherish their family and feel pride in their culture. We have so many beautiful stories to share. No matter what obstacles Hispanics have faced, we have always found a way to overcome it. Now especially, Hispanics face discrimination because of their language barriers, their skin color, and many other reasons that are fueled by xenophobic ideologies; let’s change that. I want to see little kids look up to a hardworking and loving Hispanic Princess. I want to see them feel pride in their heritage, and I want their hearts to be touched.
