The Walt Disney Company - Please induct Sally (from The Nightmare Before Christmas) into the Disney Princess catalog

The Issue

"Disney Princess" by The Walt Disney Company is one of the company's most popular brands, especially among the target audience of young girls. This brand folds in characters from all Disney animated films, with the general prerequisite of heroines who are also princesses. To date, the lineup includes: Ariel, Rapunzel, Tiana, Belle, Merida, Cinderella, Pocahontas, Aurora, Mulan, Snow White, and Jasmine.

But there is one notable exception, from one of Disney's most consistently-marketable and profitable brands: Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Sally is a strong and memorable character in this film, filling the role of not only the female lead and (ultimately) love interest, but she is also the film's voice of reason, conscience, motivator, and problem-solver.

In classic Disney Princess fashion, Sally comes from an overbearing, claustrophobic home situation, marginalized and overlooked by everyone around her, including the film's protagonist (Jack Skellington). But through her compassion, intelligence, and wits, Sally is able to resolve the problems in Halloween Town despite the odds and help develop Jack into a better person.

Regarding princess status, at the end of the film Sally is seen embracing Jack Skellington, the crowd-proclaimed "King of the Pumpkin Patch," which would effectively make Sally his queen. The original soundtrack includes an unused music track that alludes to Jack and Sally later having several children together. Admittedly, this does not make Sally a literal princess. But current inductees such as Pocahontas and Mulan are also not technically princesses.

Sally is also a fine representation of alternative style and culture for young kids. Whereas most of the current Disney Princess lineup wear pristine, monochrome dresses and elegant hairstyles, Sally's patchwork outfit, crooked stitched smile, and crafty (yet shy) personality would lend some interesting variety and spice to the group. As a role model for young girls, Sally promotes intelligence, consideration, and overcoming hesitation and timidity.

Please consider signing this petition to let The Walt Disney Company know that you are interested in having inspiring, unconventional characters like Sally added to their successful Disney Princess brand!
